Concern continues over a Congresswoman's recent comments about Somalia.
Joining others with criticism, Florida's Governor is calling for the removal of a Minnesota Democrat who has served in the U.S. House for six years.
"Expel from Congress, end citizenship and deport," said Ron DeSantis about Representative Ilhan Omar. She is facing opposition from some after remarks made where she seemed to prioritize Somalia over the United States. As one news report detailed, Omar recently told Somali Americans that she felt "Somalian first, Muslim second" and wanted "to protect Somalia's interests from inside the U.S. system."
She also objected to a deal between Somaliland and Ethiopia over ocean access. There are differing views on how to best interpret and respond to the Congresswoman's comments.
For his part, the Governor has referenced Omar before in his own debates. In the past, when some displayed hate symbols, he focused more on criticizing opposing politicians' reactions than condemning the actions.
"We're not playing their game," DeSantis said. He did not want "people trying to smear me who belong to a party that has welcomed those who make hurtful statements." In this, he singled out Omar.
There are complex issues here around public discourse, policymaking, and how we understand each other across divisions. An open and respectful dialogue may help address valid concerns while avoiding actions that further divide.
