Jared Goff has become somewhat of a cult hero in Detroit over the Lions' playoff run.
After leading Detroit to their first NFC North title in 30 years and then two home playoff wins, chants of "Jar-red Goff, Jar-red Goff" were heard all over Michigan, including at Red Wings games and even the Detroit Opera House.
"The last few weeks, but especially since the playoffs started when we won that (Rams) home game, I've enjoyed seeing the fans' response, not just for me but for the whole team," Goff said on Monday, the day after Detroit's loss in the NFC Championship Game.
"It's something I'll never forget. I know the season didn't end how we hoped. Last night was disappointing. But those two home playoff games had an amazing atmosphere, it was really fun."
Goff loves his environment in Detroit
Goff played very well in the loss to the 49ers and was by no means the reason the Lions aren't playing in their first Super Bowl in franchise history in two weeks. Without Goff's performance all season, but especially in the playoffs, Detroit would have never gotten so close to the Super Bowl.
The eight-year veteran has one year left on his contract, but the team may contact him and his representatives this offseason about a deserved pay rise and contract extension. When asked about his long-term future in Detroit, Goff said there's no place he'd rather be.
"What will happen is not up to me," he said. "I love it here. We'll see what happens over time, but yeah, I love it here and love Dan (Campbell) and all the coaches and all my teammates."
Earning the trust and acceptance of not only his coaches and teammates, but also of a city like Detroit that values hard work, has not been easy for Jared Goff. He has had to prove himself through determination, perseverance and ability. Goff showed this all season long.
Goff has played at a Pro Bowl level for two years straight and has earned the right to be the starting quarterback for the foreseeable future.
"I've enjoyed all of my time here and would like to stay longer," Goff said. "I really like Dan and my teammates. It would be great to extend my contract, but that decision is not up to me."
