Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore thinks the Reds should try to sign Ivan Toney from Brentford. Toney scored 20 goals for Brentford last season in the Premier League. He's a forward who is often linked with bigger clubs.
Collymore says Liverpool should offer Brentford a player like Cody Gakpo in a swap deal for Toney. He believes Toney could score goals playing alongside players like Salah and Diaz at Liverpool. However, others point out that this deal may not make sense.
For one, Liverpool already signed a new striker in Darwin Nunez. Adding Toney as well might mean they cannot play both up front together regularly. Also, Gakpo sees himself as a winger, not a striker like Toney, so it's unclear if he'd want to move to Brentford.
Most importantly, players cannot just be traded between clubs without agreeing to the transfer themselves. There is little chance Gakpo would want to leave Liverpool's challenge for trophies in order to join Brentford.
While Toney is a talented goalscorer, this potential swap deal proposed by Collymore has several issues that make it very unlikely to actually happen. It will be interesting to see if Toney does still push for a transfer to a Champions League club in January.
